This Maritime Suites project at Karpal Singh, George Town, Penang was designed for a Singapore-based client who engaged Kitchen Story to prepare the unit for Airbnb rental use. The project focused on creating a clean, practical and easy-to-maintain interior that is suitable for short-term stay guests while still keeping the unit visually presentable and functional.

Our scope included a new kitchen cabinet with breakfast table, wardrobe with dressing table, wiring works, painting works, curtain works and plumbing works. The final result is a bright and simple Airbnb-ready space with practical storage, a compact dining counter and essential built-in furniture for daily guest use.

Design Concept

The design direction is simple, bright and rental-friendly. Since the unit is intended for Airbnb, the materials and layout were selected based on three main priorities: easy maintenance, practical use and clean presentation.

The kitchen cabinet uses a white cabinet finish to keep the space looking open and tidy. The breakfast table was added as a practical dining and working surface, suitable for short-stay guests who may need a simple place to eat, use a laptop or prepare light meals.

For the bedroom, the wardrobe and dressing table were designed to provide basic storage and grooming function without overcrowding the room.

For Airbnb units, reliable fittings are important because the cabinet will be used by different guests regularly. Soft-closing fittings help reduce impact, protect cabinet doors and improve the overall guest experience.

Challenges

The main challenge was that the client is based in Singapore, so the project required clear communication, remote coordination and reliable site execution in Penang.

Another challenge was the unit’s purpose as an Airbnb rental. The design could not be overly complicated or high-maintenance. It needed to look clean, feel comfortable and remain practical for different guests.

The kitchen area also required careful planning because the space needed to include a functional cabinet, sink area, storage and a breakfast table without blocking the open layout of the unit.

Solutions

Kitchen Story proposed a simple and practical cabinet layout using light-coloured finishes to make the unit look brighter and more spacious. The kitchen cabinet was kept clean and straightforward, with sufficient storage for basic Airbnb use.

The breakfast table was designed as a multi-purpose surface. It works as a dining area, preparation counter and casual working space, which adds value to a short-term rental unit.

For the bedroom, the wardrobe with mirror sliding door helps save space while also functioning as a dressing area. This is more suitable for Airbnb usage because it gives guests practical storage without needing extra loose furniture.

To support the client’s remote management, Kitchen Story handled multiple scopes including wiring, plumbing, painting and curtain works, reducing the need for the overseas client to coordinate several separate contractors.

Final Outcome

The completed Maritime Suites Airbnb unit is clean, functional and guest-ready. The kitchen cabinet, breakfast table, wardrobe and dressing table were designed to support daily use while keeping the space simple and easy to maintain.
