Custom Kitchen Cabinet, Island Cabinet & Wardrobe Design
For this Platinum 3 condominium project in Teluk Kumbar, Bayan Lepas, Penang, Kitchen Story was engaged to design and build a practical kitchen cabinet system with a simple, clean, and functional layout. The client wanted a kitchen that looked neat and modern, while also including an island cabinet that could comfortably accommodate seating for three people.
In addition to the kitchen cabinet, we also custom-built a wardrobe for the client, using a clean white internal carcass with durable high-pressure laminate finishing on the external door and panel surfaces.
The overall design direction focuses on a light modern look, practical storage, durable material selection, and easy day-to-day maintenance.
Project Scope
This project included:
- Custom kitchen cabinet design and fabrication
- Island cabinet with seating allowance for three persons
- Fridge cabinet and kitchen storage planning
- Built-in wardrobe for bedroom storage
- Material and colour coordination
- Cabinet fitting and hardware installation
- Site measurement, production, delivery, and installation
Design Concept
The kitchen was designed with a simple modern concept using light wood texture finishes and a darker countertop contrast. This creates a clean and balanced look without making the space feel too heavy.
The island cabinet acts as both a preparation counter and a casual dining area, making the kitchen more practical for daily use. The design also helps improve storage and working flow within the condominium kitchen layout.
For the wardrobe, we kept the design clean and practical with a white internal carcass and external panels finished in Topmix high-pressure laminate, giving the wardrobe better durability and a more refined appearance.
Materials Used
For the kitchen cabinet:
- Solid plywood carcass
- High-pressure laminate door and panel finish
- ABS edging for exposed cabinet edges
- Sintered stone countertop
- Aluminium kickboard / cabinet plinth
- Built-in storage compartments
- Island cabinet with matching laminate finishing
For the wardrobe:
- White melamine carcass
- Solid plywood door and external panels
- Topmix high-pressure laminate finish
- ABS edging for better durability and cleaner finishing
- Hanging rail, shelves, and internal compartment planning
Fittings & Hardware Used
The cabinet fittings were selected to support daily use and long-term functionality.
Fittings include:
- DTC soft-closing door hinges
- Soft-closing drawer system
- Cabinet handles
- Hanging rail for wardrobe
- Adjustable shelving where required
- Durable cabinet hardware suitable for daily residential use
For kitchen projects, soft-closing fittings are important because they help reduce impact, protect the cabinet structure, and improve the overall user experience.
Challenges
One of the main challenges was to create a kitchen that looked simple while still providing enough storage and working space. Condominium kitchens often have limited wall length and appliance space, so the cabinet layout had to be planned carefully.
The second challenge was the island cabinet. The client wanted the island to be useful as a preparation counter and also allow seating for three people. This required proper proportion planning so the island would not block walking space or affect kitchen access.
For the wardrobe, the challenge was to create practical storage while maintaining a clean appearance that matched the overall interior style.
Solutions
To solve the kitchen layout issue, we designed a straight-line kitchen cabinet with a practical island cabinet. The island creates additional countertop space, storage space, and a casual seating area without making the kitchen feel crowded.
We selected solid plywood with high-pressure laminate for the kitchen cabinet to improve durability, especially for a daily-use kitchen environment. The sintered stone countertop was selected for its clean appearance, heat resistance, scratch resistance, and easier maintenance.
For the wardrobe, we used a white melamine internal carcass to keep the interior bright and easy to maintain, while the external door and panels were finished with solid plywood and Topmix high-pressure laminate for better durability and design consistency.
Final Outcome
The completed project delivers a clean, simple, and practical kitchen cabinet design suitable for condominium living in Teluk Kumbar, Bayan Lepas. The island cabinet improves both function and lifestyle use, while the wardrobe provides organized bedroom storage with a clean built-in appearance.
This project reflects Kitchen Story’s approach to practical custom cabinetry: proper space planning, durable material selection, functional storage, and neat workmanship.
